U23s Football Programme – Sheffield United Futures

Overview

The Sheffield United Community Foundation U23s Football Programme, delivered under the Sheffield United Futures banner, provides a unique pathway for players aged 18–23 who are looking to continue their football development alongside higher education or work opportunities.

The programme combines a high-level football schedule with educational and career support, designed to give players the chance to progress both on and off the pitch. It also complements Sheffield United Community College’s expanding Higher Education provision, including degree courses in Sports Coaching and Sports Business.

Why Choose the U23s Programme?

Opportunities in football can become limited after the age of 18. The U23s Programme ensures players continue to have access to a competitive, professional-style environment while keeping doors open for their future. The focus is on supporting players who want to train and play at a high level, while also preparing for careers both in and out of football.

Whether the goal is to step into non-league football, progress into semi-professional pathways, or balance study and playing commitments, the programme has been designed to support players at every stage.

Two Levels: Competitive & Social

The programme offers two distinct routes, allowing players to tailor their experience based on ambition and availability:

Competitive Route

  • Train and play with the goal of progressing into non-league, semi-professional, or professional environments.
  • Compete in the NFYL U23s League and showcase matches against academies.
  • Be supported with trial opportunities, highlight reel creation, and player profiling to increase visibility.
  • Commit to the full training and match schedule alongside their education or work.

Social Route

Created for players who still want to train, play, and enjoy the full experience, but without the same performance pressures. Players will:

  • Take part in all training sessions and matches.
  • Compete in fixtures but with flexibility around academic or work commitments.
  • Enjoy the social and wellbeing benefits of football alongside their Higher Education studies.
  • Still access gym sessions, analysis, and support – but with more emphasis on enjoyment and development rather than progression into the professional game.

This dual structure ensures the U23s Programme is inclusive and flexible, offering a pathway for both ambitious players and those who simply want to continue playing at a high standard while studying.

Combining Football with Higher Education

A key feature of the U23s Programme is the opportunity to study towards a Higher Education qualification while playing football at a competitive level.

Students can enrol on degree-level courses at SUCC, such as:

  • BA (Hons) Sports Coaching – for those looking to progress into coaching, teaching, or sports development roles.
  • BA (Hons) Sports Business – for those aiming for careers in sports management, marketing, and business development.

By joining the Academic Pathway, players receive free access to the U23s football programme alongside their studies. This means:

  • Balancing 12 hours per week of lectures, seminars, and coursework with a structured football training and match schedule.
  • Applying academic learning directly to the sporting environment, e.g. linking coaching modules with real practice on the pitch.
  • Developing both football and professional skills simultaneously, keeping multiple doors open after graduation.

This structure mirrors the university model used in the US and increasingly in the UK, where football is embedded into academic life. Students benefit from the same level of competition and coaching as external players, while also gaining recognised qualifications to support their long-term career prospects.

Programme Structure

Players on the U23s Programme will follow a professional-style weekly schedule, including:

  • Team Training: Three mornings per week.
  • Goalkeeper Coaching: Specialist sessions twice per week.
  • Gym & S&C: Twice weekly, led by qualified Strength & Conditioning coaches.
  • Performance Analysis: Including video reviews, feedback, and opposition preparation.
  • Matches: Weekly fixtures in the U23s National Football Youth League (NFYL), plus showcase games against professional academies.
  • Education (optional): Up to 12 hours of study per week for players enrolled on SUCC Higher Education courses, supported by regular work experience placements.

Football Pathways & Opportunities

The U23s Programme offers:

  • Competitive fixtures in the NFYL U23s League.
  • Showcase matches against professional academies.
  • Direct links with non-league clubs and trial opportunities.
  • Player CV development, highlight reels, and career guidance.
  • Progression routes into both competitive football and social/recreational playing options.

Entry Routes

There are two ways to access the U23s Programme:

  • Academic Pathway – Join the programme for free as part of a Higher Education degree at SUCC (Sports Coaching or Sports Business). Students balance 12 hours of weekly study with training and fixtures, gaining qualifications while competing at a high level.
  • External Pathway – Enrol independently via a paid annual fee, which covers training, matches, S&C, gym access, travel, kit, and extras.

Who is it for?

  • Players aged 18–23.
  • Those who want to continue playing at a high level while exploring educational or career options.
  • Current SUCC post-16 students ready to step up to the next level.
  • External players looking for an opportunity to train and compete in a structured football environment.
