Youth Hub Success: Wesley Secures Employment After a Year of Growth and Support

By Mike Exton

Wesley was first referred to the Sheffield United Community Foundation Youth Hub in April 2024. From the start, he made the most of the tailored support available at Bramall Lane.

Initially interested in careers in warehousing and construction, Wesley received help refining his CV and enrolled in a CSCS course with Skills Academy, aiming for a future apprenticeship. However, he later reconsidered his career path and decided to explore other opportunities.

Youth Hub staff referred Wesley to training provider Life Skills, where he enrolled in a TV and broadcasting course that he thoroughly enjoyed. He also took part in a discussion group focused on sports-related careers. Eager to explore further, Wesley attended training showcases and job fairs to discover more employment options. To boost his employability, he completed a six-week Digital Skills course delivered by WEA at Bramall Lane and even enjoyed a stadium tour as part of a Wellness Wednesday event.

Wesley then undertook a four-week work experience placement arranged by the DWP at B&M Discount Retail Store. As he edged closer to his goals, Youth Hub staff arranged a mock interview with Sean Clarke from Business Sheffield. While it highlighted areas for improvement, it was a valuable learning experience. A month later, a second mock interview with Evette Hudson from the NHS showed clear progress in both his technique and confidence.

When it came time for his final interview at the end of his placement, Wesley truly shone. All the staff who supported him throughout his journey were thrilled to hear he had received a job offer at the Chesterfield Road B&M store.

Well done, Wesley!
