Sheffield United Community Foundation supports our military veterans

Sheffield United Community Foundation have upskilled 14 military veterans in the area of Primary School Physical Education, thanks to the support of The Royal British Legion and Help for Heroes.

Ben Frost and Matt Moorwood delivered the 1st4sport Certificate in Supporting Physical Education to a very diverse but stimulating group of military veterans.

Thanks to Help for Heroes, the course was delivered at Phoenix House Recovery Centre in Catterick. The centre boasts state of the art learning facilities and has overnight accommodation that housed the learners and staff for that week.

The veterans were training to support Physical Education (PE) lessons in primary schools as they either adapt to life after the army or want to offer their own time volunteering in schools.

Matt Moorwood the course leader said: “I have never experienced teaching such a group of honest and determined group of individuals who work for each other to reach the aims and outcomes of the course.

“On day one, I realised that each individual on the course has such an interesting and inspirational background.

“Their stories, experience and skills developed in the military can be key to supporting the education to young children in schools, such as time-keeping, giving your all and the importance of working as a team.”
