PLPS Case Study: Improving Maths for Year 1 Children

Premier League Primary Stars is more than sport and physical activity and our team have been supporting year one children at Whiteway’s Primary School with their Math skills.

Many children who returned to school in September were behind expected levels in Maths due to the impact of the pandemic. Through the Premier League Primary Stars programme we were able to provide a coach to support Maths lessons and deliver fun Maths-based activities. This helped the children to develop and learn skills that they missed during the lockdown in a fun and enjoyable way.

A year one pupil said: “I really like doing Maths with James [Sheffield United Community Foundation’s PL Primary Stars Coordinator], I find it really fun!”

Mrs Howe, a teacher at Whiteway’s Primary school, said: ”The pandemic has had a major impact on all the children but for some it has left them further behind than others.

“Having James come in to deliver extra Maths lessons for those children has helped them come a long way in this subject by providing a fun learning environment.

“The children look forward to seeing him every week.”

James Morley, Sheffield United Community Foundation PL Primary Stars Coordinator, said: “It was important that once schools reopened that we had an impact on those children that struggled the most from the COVID-19 lockdown.”

“It was a pleasure to be able to come in each week and deliver fun lessons using the PL Primary Stars resources and watch the children gain a better understanding of Maths.”
