Bramall Lane levels up with launch of new Esports Arena

Sheffield United Community Foundation is delighted to announce the completion of a major refurbishment project that has transformed its Esports provision at Bramall Lane, creating a flagship Esports Arena that will officially open to students and community groups from September 2026.

The new Esports Arena represents the latest chapter in the Foundation’s rapidly growing Esports journey. Since launching its initial Esports provision in 2021, the programme has continued to expand year on year, demonstrating the increasing demand for digital, creative, and technology-focused education pathways designed to meet the needs of a changing digital workplace.

Ryan Collins, Head of Education at Sheffield United Community Foundation, reflected on the origins and purpose of the programme:

“When we launched our Esports programme in 2021, our aim was to create an educational pathway that reflected the interests of a new generation of learners and the demands of an ever-evolving digital workplace. We recognised that the future workforce would require a broader range of digital, communication, content creation, and technology skills, and Esports provided an engaging platform through which to develop them.

The completion of the Esports Arena demonstrates just how far the programme has come in a relatively short space of time. We have evolved from a single learning space into a dedicated Esports department with multiple specialist environments that mirror the opportunities available within this rapidly growing industry. This investment ensures our students have access to industry-inspired facilities that prepare them for the careers of tomorrow, while continuing to provide an exciting and engaging educational experience today.”

What began as a single learning environment in 2021 has now developed into a fully established Esports department. As part of the latest investment, existing equipment has been refurbished and repurposed, enabling the creation of three dedicated Esports rooms, each designed with a distinct purpose and learning focus.

At the centre of the provision sits the newly named Esports Arena, a flagship, high-specification space that represents the ambition, growth, and continued development of the programme.

Alongside this, learners now also benefit from a dedicated F1 Racing Simulator Suite, providing immersive motorsport and simulation experiences, and a fully equipped Podcast Studio, supporting skills development in broadcasting, media production, content creation, and digital communication.

Finally, the Foundation has built its own fully equipped Esports Gaming Bus, which will allow us to take Esports directly into local schools, community settings, and events across the region. The mobile facility will provide opportunities to engage new audiences, deliver outreach activities, showcase the programme, and introduce young people to the educational and career pathways available within the rapidly growing Esports and digital industries.

James Sellars, Esports Education Manager, highlighted the journey of the programme and its impact on learners and the wider community:

“Having joined the Esports programme at its inception, it has been incredible to see how far it has evolved and grown. What began as a small initial cohort of around 10 learners has developed into a full and thriving programme, now spanning Level 2 through to Higher Education pathways.

We have also been able to engage the local community and schools through a range of projects and initiatives, which has been a really important part of our growth.

What is particularly special for me is seeing learners who joined the programme with NEET backgrounds, or who faced significant personal and educational challenges, go on to thrive in this environment. To watch them develop not only academically, but also personally, has been a genuine privilege and one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey.”

The Foundation extends its sincere thanks to all partners who have supported the development and delivery of the Esports provision, particularly throughout the creation of the new Esports Arena and wider learning spaces.

In particular, Barnsley College has remained a key education partner since the programme’s inception, playing a vital role in shaping the course pathways and supporting long-term programme development. This strong partnership enables us to successfully deliver the course through a collaborative and well-established delivery model, ensuring learners benefit from high-quality teaching, clear progression routes, and a consistent, supportive learning experience.

A major contribution to the development of the physical learning environment has come from XMA, whose significant investment and project support has been instrumental in delivering a high-quality, bespoke Esports facilies. Without their community-focused investment, this project simply would not have been possible at this scale, and their commitment to supporting education-led initiatives has been exceptional throughout. Their expertise, responsiveness, and hands-on support during the build process ensured the spaces were delivered to a consistently high standard, aligned with both educational and industry expectations. They come highly recommended for any clubs or organisations looking to move into this space and develop similar provision.

The equipment, hardware and furniture, supplied by Top-Tec Esports, Overclockers UK, SteelSeries and AOC Gaming has ensured all rooms are equipped with high-performance, reliable, and industry-relevant hardware, enabling learners to study and study in a professional-standard environment.

The Foundation would also like to recognise the ongoing support of British Esports, who have worked alongside the programme since its early development, providing guidance, industry insight, and continued support in helping to shape and strengthen the provision.

Collectively, these partnerships have been fundamental in bringing the project to life and ensuring the Esports offer continues to grow as one of the region’s most innovative education-led Esports environments.

The new facilities will support learners across the Foundation’s Esports Education programmes, while also providing opportunities for community engagement, school partnerships, and progression into further study and employment pathways.

With demand continuing to grow, a limited number of places remain available for students wishing to join the programme in September 2026.

Further exciting developments are also on the horizon, with a Higher Education Esports programme due to be announced soon.

The future of Esports at Bramall Lane continues to strengthen, marking another major step forward in establishing a leading, forward-thinking digital education hub for the region.
