Move More: Making Sheffield a More Active, Healthy and Connected Community
Move More, Sheffield’s city-wide strategy to create a healthier, happier and more connected city, reached tens of thousands of people in the last year, expanding access to physical activity opportunities and laying the foundations for improved health and wellbeing.
Move More is a delivery arm of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) in Sheffield, a strategic consortium of 11 partner organisations, including Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Yorkshire Sport Foundation, and others.
At the inaugural Move More Conference, held at The Wave in Sheffield, the Move More Annual Highlight Report 2024 was launched, showcasing achievements across six key priority areas – communities, education, health and social care, active travel, sport, and environment – each functioning as network for learning, sharing, and collaborating.
Chris Bailey, CEO at Sheffield United Community Foundation, and Chair of Move More Active Communities, said: “It’s a privilege to be a part of the city-wide Move More strategy. These initiatives are making a real difference, supporting thousands of people across Sheffield to be more active, healthy, and connected. By bringing together partners across communities, health, education, transport, and sport, we’re creating the conditions that make it easier for people to move more in their everyday lives. This collaborative approach is helping to shape a city where physical activity is accessible, inclusive, and a normal part of life for everyone.”

Louie’s Trip to Bramall Lane
It was our pleasure to welcome Louie, a participant from our disability football programme, his brother Jake and dad Tom, to Bramall Lane!
As mentioned in our May catch up, Louie has become an inspiring figure at our inclusive football sessions. Born prematurely at just 28 weeks and weighing 1lb 15oz, Louie lives with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and several complex needs. Despite his challenges, he has shown remarkable strength, defying expectations and thriving through sport.
Louie’s family is currently fundraising for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery, which could significantly improve his mobility. Although he doesn’t qualify for NHS funding, they remain hopeful, raising funds for the operation, essential home adaptations, and rehabilitation. Despite various family illnesses, the family is determined to give him the best possible future.

Youth Hub Success: Wesley Secures Employment After a Year of Growth and Support
When Wesley first joined the Sheffield United Community Foundation Youth Hub in April 2024, he was uncertain about his future – but ready to explore. With personalised support at Bramall Lane, he initially pursued interests in warehousing and construction, enrolling in a CSCS course. But his journey didn’t stop there.
Wesley went on to discover new passions, enrolling in a TV and broadcasting course through Life Skills and participating in sports career discussions. He enhanced his digital skills, explored job fairs, and gained hands-on retail experience during a work placement at B&M. With guidance from mock interviews and growing confidence, Wesley impressed at his final interview, and landed the job!

College Announces New Partnership with Mr D’z Gym
Sheffield United Community College is excited to announce a new partnership with Mr D’z Gym, set to launch in July 2025. This collaboration will provide college students based at our Handsworth site with access to weekly strength and conditioning sessions, enhancing their physical development and further aligning the college’s programme with a professional academy model.
Ryan Collins, Education Manger, commented on the partnership: “We’ve been striving to secure a strength and conditioning facility for a number of years, so discovering a purpose-built gym less than a mile from our Handsworth site felt like the perfect fit. Mr D’z is a family-run gym, which aligns perfectly with the Foundation’s wider goal of supporting local people and businesses. We’re really looking forward to building a long-term relationship with Ryan and his team.”

South Yorkshire Football Clubs Unite to Tackle Violence Against Women and Knife Crime
A powerful new partnership between five South Yorkshire football club community organisations has secured key funding to tackle knife crime and violence against women and girls. Backed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and the Premier League Charitable Fund, the initiative unites Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Barnsley, and Doncaster Rovers — in a shared mission to create safer communities.
