College Blades Media Pathway
Sheffield United Community College is delighted to announce the launch of a new enrichment pathway, College Blades Media, starting in September 2025. Building on the success of the existing Football, Fitness, and Esports pathways, this exciting new pathway will offer current and prospective students the opportunity to explore the media, journalism, performance analysis and content creation side of the sport/esport industries.
Delivered alongside their main Sport or Esport post-16 qualification, this pathway will provide students with hands-on opportunities, such as:
- Commentating on live fixtures / Shoutcasting British Esports
- Publishing match / game reports and blogs.
- Interviewing students, players, and coaches.
- Creating social media content.
- Community Blades Podcast (record, edit or deliver on the channel)
- Capturing live-action photography.
- Performance analysis (record, edit and deliver match feedback)
The programme seamlessly integrates with the college’s current enrichment pathways (e.g. College fixtures, Varsity, Blades Podcast), giving students real-world opportunities to apply and develop their skills. All work completed within this pathway will be compiled into an ongoing personal portfolio, which learners can use to strengthen applications for university or employment opportunities. One of our students from last year, Lowan, created a booklet detailing her experience at the College. You can read this here.
This pathway also aligns with our new Sports Business and Management degree, which allows learners to undertake full-time placements within this field of work.
Ryan Collins, Education Manager, shared his excitement about this new initiative: “As a college, we are always looking to innovate our programmes to meet learners’ needs and align with future employment trends. The rise in media and marketing higher education programmes in recent years highlights the demand for skills in this area. We believe this enrichment pathway will help streamline students into careers in media, performance analysis and content creation. Additionally, we hope this new offering will attract a broader range of learners, much like our previous Fitness and Esports pathways have done.”
