Celebrating an Outstanding Year at Sheffield United Community College: 2024–25 in Review
Sheffield United Community College has had a phenomenal 2024–25 academic year, marked by record-breaking achievements, expanded opportunities, and a strong commitment to student success and community impact. From academic excellence to exciting international trips, this year has been a testament to the hard work and passion of both students and staff.
Academic Excellence and Student Success
With 264 students enrolled in Post-16 and Higher Education programmes, the college continues to provide diverse and accessible learning pathways. It achieved a remarkable 94% retention rate and an outstanding 98% course completion rate across all qualifications. These results reflect not only the dedication of students but also the high-quality support and instruction provided by staff.
The student experience has been once again overwhelmingly positive, with 92% of learners rating their courses as good or outstanding, and 95% stating they would recommend the college to a friend. 98% of students felt supported by staff both inside and outside of the classroom too. A strong progression rate was also evident, with 89% of Year 13 students moving on to Higher Education, including many who joined the college’s own Degree Pathway.
Additionally, students completed 95 extra qualifications in critical areas like fitness, safeguarding, mental health, coaching, and first aid.
Enrichment, Experience, and Exploration
Away from the classroom, students embraced a variety of enrichment opportunities. 61 students took part in international college tours to Malaga (Sport) and Berlin (Esports), while 79 attended a residential trip to Edale, developing leadership and team-building skills.
The academic year featured 10 exciting college trips, from Manchester’s festive markets to national events at St. George’s Park, Williams F1, and the NVM BAFTA Showcase. Meanwhile, 154 students were celebrated at the annual College Awards Evening, recognising their efforts and accomplishments.
Giving Back and Making a Difference
Community impact remained at the heart of the college. Students raised £3,162 for Young Minds, a youth mental health charity, through a sponsored walk on their Edale residential. They also donated 243 gifts for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital “Gift for Santa” campaign – showcasing the generosity and compassion of the college community.
Expanding Opportunities and Partnerships
This year saw the launch of two new academic pathways: a Sports Business Degree and the Esports BTEC Level 2, broadening the scope for student success in emerging industries.
Work-related learning was also a highlight, with 52 work experience opportunities and 28 active partnerships enhancing student employability. In sports, 9 football enrichment teams (7 men’s and 2 women’s) competed across the NFYL and CEFA leagues, while 23 students took part in the Fitness Enrichment pathway; 96% of whom are now qualified Fitness Instructors.
Technology, Esports, and Innovation
Esports continued to thrive, with students competing in 9 game titles including Valorant, FC25, and Formula 1. Enhancing the learning experience further, the college installed two new F1 racing simulators at Bramall Lane, in collaboration with the Williams F1 Education programme.
Additionally, 42 students joined the new Chesterfield College football enrichment programme, strengthening ties across educational partnerships.
A Team Effort
The success of the college wouldn’t be possible without its dedicated 27 staff members, including tutors, mentors, and enrichment coaches, who supported students every step of the way.
Championship Glory
In sports, the college ended the year with three major titles:
- NFYL League Champions
- NFYL Cup Champions (defeating Bolton Wanderers at QPR’s MATRADE Loftus Road stadium)
- 2025 Varsity Champions (defeating Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme)
